Carly Rae Jepsen's "Run Away With Me" - Single Review

Sometimes you just can't escape the clutches of a massive worldwide hit... the "one hit wonder syndrome" that's claimed the likes of Gotye, Icona Pop and Foster the People.

"Call Me Maybe" songstress Carly Rae Jepsen should have experienced a string of number one hits when tracks such as "This Kiss" and "Tonight I'm Getting Over You" were released... unfortunately the pop cards were not in the artist's favor and her sparkling debut album, Kiss, came and went without much noise.

For her upcoming sophomore effort E·MO·TION, the Canadian artist has already shared lead single "I Really Like You", a fun Top 40 hit, with a Tom Hanks and Justin Bieber-assisted music video, and a few additional exciting album cuts. However, it's the newly announced official second single, the 80s-leaning, retro-styled instant pop masterpiece "Run Away With Me", that is causing all sorts of positive chatter.

The new single definitely overpowers its predecessor and becomes a shining pop release that will be hard to escape once it makes its way onto radio. "Oh baby, take me to the feeling, I'll be your sinner in secret, when the lights go out, run away with me," she sings on the infectious and adorable chorus, one produced by hitmaker Shellback (Taylor Swift, Adam Lambert). It screams for constant summer airplay and stays true to the singer's bubbly personality.

"Run Away With Me" has all the pieces needed for a chance at reclaiming the top of the charts, however, it may be a little too late for Jepsen. If released as the upcoming album's lead single, things may have gone differently, and it's a shame since the cute new track is epic in every pop music standard kind of way. From the golden hook to Jepsen's charisma, it's all there, rolled into one solid offering.

While the aforementioned "I Really Like You" wasn't the huge hit everyone expected it to be, "Run Away With Me" shows that Jepsen will always be a pop critic's darling, capable of crafting an addictive, not-to-be-taken-too-seriously, chart worthy hit... it is just unfortunate that everything but Swift music gets a chance to succeed. This is true pop.
