Semi Precious Weapons' "Look To The Stars" - Song Review

After immediately catching my attention as Lady Gaga's opening act on her critically-acclaimed and successful Monster Ball Tour back in 2010, giving me an up close & personal viewing of their 2012 SXSW show (they pulled me into a 21+ venue) and finishing up a stint on Ke$ha's still-impressive Warrior tour, the deliciously glam rock group that is Semi Precious Weapons are ready to make a name for themselves without the help of powerful pop females.

Following the release of their second studio album, You Love You, the band, fronted by lead singer Justin Tranter, starting teasing new material with the premiere of "Aviation High", a strong effort which showcased a noticeable change in sound for the outrageous group. The raunchy and seductive "Cherries on Ice" soon followed. Now, the boys just keep on giving as a new song from their upcoming album has been unleashed for their musically starved fans.

"Look to the Stars", the new, incredibly amazing, rock-laced track off Aviation, focuses on the transition of the band from a rebel glam rock act to a serious rock n' roll power group that could eventually command airwaves once their new material reaches a wider audience. "Put a Diamond In It" and "Sticky With Champagne" were amazing, carefree songs, but somehow the recent releases have more of an alternative radio-friendly vibe with meaningful lyrics and convincing vocal performances. Tranter is growing as a well-rounded vocalist and these songs are perfectly tailored around his abilities.

Already having received glam king Adam Lambert's seal of approval, "Look to the Stars" honestly keeps things rather simple, which may be the most surprising and intriguing aspect of the new track. "When the sun sets, no matter where we are, when the sun sets, we can look to the stars", Tratner beautifully screams on the chorus before heavy drums and guitars kick in to give a stadium concert feel. These are the types of songs that were made to be sung live. Very 80s!

Semi Precious Weapons are a very unique band, with a diverse range of influences. Witnessing Tranter jump around the stage in six-inch heels made my love for him and the group grow even more. For this new era of their career, SPW are toning things down, diving into different genres, and coming out with impressive results which should not get overlooked. The three tracks from their upcoming album previewed so far embody the true essence of the band, but "Look to the Stars", out on January 14, may be the most convincing and effective cut. Really boosting my excitement for Aviation!
